Chattooga County’s future agricultural students will take center stage today, Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, as the highly anticipated 4-H and FFA Poultry Show and Auction takes place at the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair. This event marks the culmination of months of dedication from local students, showcasing their poultry projects and fostering vital agricultural skills. Also, the Junior Market Beef Show takes place this afternoon.

Since April 2025, participating 4-H and FFA members have meticulously raised their poultry, starting with eight three-day-old chicks each. This year’s project features Black Star and Red Star breeds, both renowned for their excellent light brown egg production. Students were required to maintain detailed records, demonstrating responsible animal husbandry and record-keeping, and attended workshops to learn how to select their best three hens for judging.

The first phase of the evening began earlier today with the poultry judging at 4:00 PM, where students’ selected pens of three hens were evaluated on their quality and characteristics. Anticipation will build as awards for the top poultry projects are announced at 6:30 PM.

The main event, the Poultry Auction, is set to begin promptly at 7:00 PM. Community members are encouraged to arrive by 6:30 PM to receive a bid number and participate in supporting these young agriculturists, as all proceeds from the sale of the pens of three hens will go directly to the students. For convenience, buyers will be provided with specially built cages to transport their new hens home, courtesy of Mr. Yarbrough’s 8th-grade Chattooga County FFA Basic Ag Class students.

Organizers emphasize that livestock projects like these are invaluable, promoting responsibility, self-motivation, meticulous record-keeping, and fundamental agricultural education among students. Purchasing these birds is not just acquiring high-quality egg-laying hens; it’s an investment in the future of Chattooga County’s youth and agricultural heritage.

The 4-H and FFA Poultry Show and Auction is just one of many exciting events happening today, Saturday, August 23rd, at the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair, which runs from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Fairgoers can also catch the 4-H and FFA Junior Beef Show and enjoy live entertainment on the Smith Ironworks Stage tonight with The Band Chickamauga at 7 PM, followed by Eat A Peach: A Tribute to The Allman Brothers Band at 9 PM.
