First responders memorial at United Community Bank in Summerville

Almost everyone in Chattooga County who is over the age of twenty-five can remember where they are and what they were doing twenty years-ago today.  It was September 11, 2001 when terrorist struck the United States and left an indelible impression on the memories of Americans.

In the following days, Americans watched television and listened to radio reports about brave first responders who were attending to the scene at the World Trade Center in New York City.  Terrorists also struck the Pentagon and attempted another attack that was diverted by patriotic citizens onboard a flight bound for Washington, D.C.  In all, 2996 people lost their lives from the attacks.

Since that time, 9/11 has become a “national day of service” to others and a time to remember the first responders: firefighters, police and EMT’s, that keep us all safe year-round.

In honor of 9/11, Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry fed first responders lunch on Friday at the Chattooga County Ag Center.  Commissioner Elsberry issued a press release about 9/11 saying,  “Let us pray and give thanks to our first responders who risk their own lives to keep us safe every day.  Thank you for your dedication and commitment to serve our community and thank you to your families for the sacrifices they make in order for you to serve.”
