There were some serious doubts about whether or not unemployment figures published by the Georgia Department of Labor for the month of February were correct, especially here in Chattooga County where the rate jumped dramatically – coming in at 10.1%
Several other counties experienced higher numbers but none as drastic as Chattooga.
Now, with numbers for the month of March available – it appears there may very well have been a problem with that previous report. For the month of March Chattooga County's rate is back to a flat six percent and many surrounding counties are seeing a return to what they usually consider "normal" for this time of year.
According to the Department of Labor the rate for the Northwest Georgia Region as a whole came in at 5.6%, down three-tenths of a point from February.
