Everyone knows that the cost of living has increased greatly over the past several years, and while the median annual income of workers in the United States has risen sharply over the past several years, the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows Chattooga County’s workers are not making much more than they were four years ago.
The Census Bureau says that Chattooga’s median income is $37,351 per worker. That compares to $61,224 for the average worker’s income in Georgia. The national median income is even higher at $64,944. Four years ago, the median income in Chattooga County was $35,245 compared to $51,037 for Georgia and $55,322.
Meanwhile, over 21% of Chattooga County residents are below the poverty level in Chattooga County. The largest demographic of the population that live below the poverty level in Chattooga County are females between the ages of 55 and 64. The national poverty level is 12.1%.
Also, the number of work eligible adults in the county had dropped by almost 800 people.
