An investigator with the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department has been booked into the DeKalb County, Alabama Jail.  AM 1180 has learned that the deputy was arrested in DeKalb County overnight.  DeKalb County officials say that they are still working on charges against the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department employee.  We will have more information later today.

UPDATE: 7:35 AM Friday

The DeKalb County Alabama Sheriff's Department confirms that Joseph Matthew Hayes, an investigator with the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department has been booked into the DeKalb County Jail in Fort Payne and charged with possession of a controlled substance along with possession of drug paraphernalia.  DeKalb County Sheriff's officials say that bond must be set within 72 hours and that bond would most likely be set today.  AM 1180 will have more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE 8:08 AM

A Chattooga County Sheriff's Investigator is in the DeKalb County Jail this morning. According to the DeKalb County Jail officials, 33-year-old Matt Hayes is charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Hayes reportedly went missing around 4:30 yesterday afternoon when no one was able to reach him by cell phone. By 8 p.m. officials were fearful something was wrong. Verizon Wireless reportedly tracked Hayes' last cell phone location to near Dover's Cut Road. That is where a multi-agency search began.

Reportedly at this time, Hayes was in Alabama at a store. He reportedly didn't go inside the store. Hayes reportedly drove his Sheriff's Department Suburban down a driveway near the store and parked the vehicle. A curious store employee checked on  Hayes and reportedly was greeted with a gun pointed in her face. The gun reportedly was also pointed at a male. When the gun was pointed at the woman, her husband reportedly struck Hayes in the face with a stick busting his eye and 911 was called.

Fort Payne Police and the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office reportedly responded. Suspected cocaine reportedly was found in Hayes back pocket and in his shirt picket. He also reportedly had 59 hydrocodone pills in an attaché case in his sheriff's vehicle. Officials are concerned those drugs came from the sheriff's department's evidence room

Not only is Hayes an investigator for the Sheriff's Department but he is also the evidence custodian. It was reported that yesterday Hayes was to have destroyed drug evidence from resolved 2009 and 2010 cases. The Sheriff is expected to summon the GBI this morning.
