The Chattooga County Historical Society is set to hold its Spring meeting on Sunday, April 13th, at 2 PM at the Summerville Depot. The event is free and open to the public, with a special invitation extended to those who haven’t attended a meeting before.

The Society is actively seeking new members who share an interest in the rich history of Chattooga County and are eager to contribute to their efforts. More details about the meeting agenda will be released this week on the Historical Society’s Facebook page.

Following the meeting, attendees are invited to a brief dedication ceremony at the Summerville Cemetery. The ceremony will commemorate the unveiling of a new historical marker honoring Smith Knox, a remarkable figure in Chattooga County history. Knox was an enslaved man who bravely purchased his and his wife’s freedom. He subsequently established himself as a successful shoemaker, earning the respect and admiration of the community. His funeral was attended by hundreds of citizens, a testament to his lasting impact.
