Cloudland School
The summer meeting of the Chattooga County Historical Society will take place this Sunday, July 9th at 2 pm at the historic depot in Summerville. The theme for the summer meeting is schools of Chattooga County–from its earliest years through the 1960s.
Reading, Writing and Arithmetic
Did you attend school at Subligna, A.C. Carter, Gore, Lyerly, Menlo, Welmyer, Holland, South Summerville, Cloudland or Teloga school? Trion, Summerville or Pennville? Do you know about the academies and “poor schools” that Chattooga children attended in the 1800s? These and other schools will be featured at the Historical Society’s upcoming meeting. You have a special invitation to attend!
Schools Were the Heart of County Communities
This program will feature several speakers who will each briefly recall their time at schools of the past and how those schools helped shape life in the different communities of the county.
The organization’s president, Gene McGinnis, commented, “Everyone is invited to attend and bring any memorabilia they may have to share. We plan to have tables set up to display items from the Historical Society collection. Do you have an old Summerville, Menlo, or Lyerly letter jacket? An A.C. Carter or Gore diploma? A Menlo annual? Bring it to exhibit at the meeting or for the Society to copy for preservation.”
Be a Part of the Historical Society
Refreshments will be served. Ample time will be allotted for attendees to enjoy the memorabilia on display.
Meetings of the Chattooga County Historical Society are free and open to the public. Membership is comprised of almost 300 families, both from inside and outside the county. Family memberships in the organization are $20.00 per year and include a quarterly publication—and all are welcome to join. Contact the Society at P.O.
