Chattooga County School students are headed back to class today after a week off due to issues related to the Labor Day Weekend flood.  Chattooga County School Supt. Jared Hosmer made the decision last week to call off school after water service was disrupted at almost all county schools.

Without water, it was impossible to fix meals and provide sanitary conditions for students.  With both the City of Summerville and the City of Menlo not having water after the flood due to issues at the Summerville water treatment plant, nearly every county school was affected.

Chattooga High School, Summerville Middle School and Leroy Massey Elementary School are all served by City of Summerville water and Menlo Elementary is served by City of Menlo water.

With water pressure restored to many areas over the weekend, the decision was made on Sunday to have school starting back today.  But the school district will have to provide bottled drinking water for students, as the Summerville water system is still under a boil water order.

Chattooga County School Supt. Jared Hosmer says that the school system realizes that some students and their families may still be struggling from the affects of the flood and says families in need should reach out to the school system for help if they need it.

As far as the days that were missed – the school system will have the option of making those days up on Mondays since they are on a four-day school calendar.  No official word has been given as to when the four missed days will be made up.
