Chattooga County School Superintendent Jimmy Lenderman spoke with AM 1180 about the recent school shooting in Connecticut and what steps the Chattooga County School System is taking to ensure the safety of its students.

Lenderman said, “I know there is a lot of concern over the shooting that occurred at the school (in Connecticut) last week…and you are concerned about your children.  We do have plans in effect.  They have been in effect, if an intruder came into a school.  We’re updating those, reviewing them, making sure that every thing we can think of is in there.  We’re now having the principals over Christmas to think about ways we can improve our safety.”

Lenderman said that one of the policies that will be enforced will be to make sure that EVERYONE signs in when they come into the school and will use the front entrance.  Lenderman said that it could cause some inconvenience.  The school superintendent said, “now it’s going to cause some inconvenience, even to myself.  I will sign in at every school when I walk in the school, I will go to the front office.  So we are going to ask everyone to sign in.  The doors will be locked around the school, so you will need to come to the front door.”

Lenderman also said that he is asking local law enforcement to step up their presence at schools around the county.  Lenderman said “I don’t think there is anything that is inconvenient if it can save the life of one child.”
