Police are investigating three separate scenes, after a Chickamauga Police officer was shot by an armed suspect on Wilder Road in Walker County.
The gunman opened fire, hitting a police officer and sped off.
Police say he then carjacked a woman, leading police on a high speed chase onto Interstate 75 where he crashed at the Tennessee/Georgia line.
The shooting happened after Chickamauga Police responded to a domestic call involving three people inside a jeep.
Michael Brooks challenged the two officers that stopped him and apparently got into an altercation with one of the officers, knocking part of the taser loose off the gun, and managed to take the duty weapon away from the officer, according to Chickamauga Police Chief Michael Haney. At this point Brooks began firing rounds.
Nearby, neighbors say they heard about six shots, one of them hitting Officer Ira Taylor, just above the knee.
A BOLO was issued as Brooks took off. A Walker County detective was on his way home on Three Notch Road in Catoosa County when he spotted the vehicle. He stopped and discovered that Brooks had ditched the vehicle and carjacked a woman with the officer's gun. Moments later another Walker County officer spotted the vehicle heading eastbound on Battlefield Parkway.
Then the case was on, going up I-75 through rush hour traffic.
After many attempts to try to stop Brooks who refused, traffic came to a halt when deputies managed to get him to stop just past the Tennessee state line.
According to Sheriff Steve Wilson, Brooks had turned around and was coming back southbound in the northbound lanes when a Walker County Sheriff's Office deputy and a Catoosa County Sheriff's deputy performed a maneuver and squeezed him in and were able to take him into custody with no one bin injured.
Brooks is from Lindale, California and reportedly has no criminal history. He faces a long list of charges, including aggravated assault and carjacking.
Also in the car with Brooks was a young woman from Georgia and a man from Pennsylvania. They currently don't face any charges.
The GBI is investigating the shooting.
Officer Taylor is expected to be okay.
