A 12-year-old is dead after a high-speed chase ended with a Georgia State Patrol trooper using a Pursuit Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver on the suspect’s vehicle.
GSP said the chase started as an early morning traffic stop in Paulding County on Friday, September 10.
Around 1:09 a.m., a trooper patrolling Bethel Church Rd. in Paulding County witnessed a speeding Kia Sorento.
The trooper pulled the driver over, but the driver refused to lower his window or give the trooper any form of identification.
The trooper asked the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office for backup, and a Paulding County deputy smashed out the driver’s window. The driver sped off and a chase started, continuing down Georgia Hwy. 92 at a high speed.
GSP said the suspect — later identified as 35-year-old Charlie Moore — was driving recklessly and the trooper executed the PIT maneuver to stop Moore.
The Kia veered off the road and overturned in a ditch. The victim, 12-year-old Leden Boykins, was killed in the accident. GSP said he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
Moore and the other passenger, a 14-year-old male, were hospitalized for minor injuries.
Moore faces charges of murder while committing a crime, homicide vehicle in the first degree, aggravated assault against a peace officer, DUI, endangering a child while driving under the influence, having an open container in a motor vehicle, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, and several other charges, GSP said.
GSP’s Office of Professional Standards is holding an internal investigation and the department’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting in the crash investigation.
