According to Walker County sheriff Steve Wilson, a 40-year-old woman was killed in an accident on Saturday, October 10th while repelling on Pigeon Mountain. According to news reports, the woman died after falling 30 feet from a Rocktown Trail.
On Sunday, Walker County coroner Dewayne Wilson confirmed the identity of the woman as Suzanne Huffman, a military veteran, Columbus, Georgia police officer and a student at Columbus State University.
Huffman was traveling with a church group from Columbus with her two children, who were with her at the time of the accident.
Walker County 911 dispatched emergency responders about 4 PM to Rocky Lane on Pigeon Mountain. The exact cause of death is pending an autopsy at the state crime lab in Atlanta.
Columbus State University sent out an email to their students, faculty and staff on Sunday night notifying them about Huffman's death. Huffman was a senior biology major at the university.
