The Chattooga County Government has declared a State of Emergency due to a severe winter weather event affecting Northwest Georgia. The declaration is effective starting Friday, January 10, 2025. Sole Commissioner Andy Allen announced this after the National Weather Service warned of hazardous conditions, including snow, ice, and very low temperatures that are expected to continue into Saturday.
With significant snow and ice accumulation possible, and wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour are anticipated on Saturday, which may lead to downed trees and power lines, the commissioner felt that the declaration was prudent.
Commissioner Allen stated that the severe weather forecast necessitated proactive measures to safeguard residents. The declaration enables the county to use its resources effectively and coordinate with state authorities for assistance. The order allows the Chattooga County Emergency Management Agency to activate the Local Emergency Operations Plan and implement necessary emergency management measures. This aligns with Governor Brian Kemp’s statewide executive order for emergency response issued on January 9.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for several counties, including Chattooga, from 7:00 AM on January 10 until 7:00 AM on January 11. Residents are advised to prepare for potential road hazards and stay informed, while the State of Emergency will last until January 12, 2025, at 11:59 PM, unless extended.
