Chattooga County Commissioner Andy Allen has announced a new garbage disposal agreement that will save taxpayers around $114,000 each year. The new deal comes after a significant rise in “land load” fees, particularly at the Cedartown location, which was putting pressure on the county’s sanitation budget due to increased costs for mandated services.

“Every once in a while, you just get lucky,” remarked Commissioner Andy Allen, following the announcement of the deal, which sharply cuts the county’s garbage disposal costs just as regional fees were set to skyrocket.

Commissioner Allen told WZQZ News recently that the county needed a new contract to combat these rising fees, which threatened to inflate the budget for waste hauling. The new arrangement involves a different disposal strategy where Chattooga County will continue to manage local garbage at a much lower price per ton. While details are still being ironed out, it appears that the county  might work with a new contractor, possibly Republic Services, to secure better long-term disposal rates.

This agreement will also help with the disposal of hard-to-manage materials like mattresses and construction debris. The quick implementation of the contract means the county will immediately benefit from these savings, allowing it to maintain low rates while effectively managing all local waste.

Overall, the new strategy offsets the increased fees and provides significant financial relief for the county and its citizens.
