Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Andy Allen is clarifying the county’s newly adopted 180-day moratorium on tiny home developments and container homes following questions from residents.

The moratorium was approved after a public meeting last Wednesday and is intended to give the county time to review and potentially update land use regulations related to those types of developments.

Allen told WZQZ News that residents are encouraged to read the complete text of the moratorium, which has been published by local media outlets and is also available through the Chattooga County Commissioner’s Office.

The commissioner emphasized that the moratorium does not prohibit private citizens from building or placing a tiny home on their own property. Instead, he said, it applies only to tiny home developments.

Allen said the portion of the moratorium addressing container homes was adopted because of safety concerns, including ensuring proper emergency exits and protecting both residents and first responders in the event of a fire or other emergency.

“If people read what was enacted, they will see that it only applies to tiny home developments and does not regulate what a private landowner does on their own land,” Allen told WZQZ.
