September is Hunger Action Month and the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, Feeding America, is calling on everyone to take action to end hunger. During the month-long campaign, Feeding America is urging the public to collectively take one million actions to create change and end hunger by donating, advocating, volunteering or spreading the word online.
The USDA estimates 1 in 7 people and 1 in 5 children experienced food insecurity in 2022. A recent Feeding America survey found around 80% of responding food banks reported seeing demand for food assistance increase or stay the same in June 2024 compared to June 2023. This includes around 65% of responding food banks that reported seeing an increase in the number of neighbors served. Last year, through a network of more than 200 food banks, 21 statewide food bank associations, and over 60,000 partner agencies, food pantries and meal programs, Feeding America helps provide 5.3 billion meals to tens of millions of people in need.
Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry signed a proclamation recognizing Hunger in Action Month in Chattooga County. He was joined by representatives from local groups who work to alleviate hunger in our community, including the Community Resource Center of Chattooga County and Helping Hands, Ending Hunger.
