Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry says that he is waiting on final numbers before he makes any decisions regarding property taxes for this year.

When asked by local media if he had seen the property tax numbers for this year, the commissioner said that he had only seen preliminary numbers.  Elsberry would not comment on if he expected to see a decrease in the millage rate.  When asked specifically about a millage rate decrease, the commissioner said that he was waiting on the final numbers from the tax assessor’s office and said “we will crunch the numbers” at that time.

Chattooga County calculates the property tax due based on the fair market value of the home or property in question, as determined by the Chattooga County Property Tax Assessor. Currently, Chattooga County collects taxes on 0.63% of a property’s fair market value, on average.

Chattooga County has one of the lowest median property tax rates in the United States.  The average Chattooga County property owner pays $509 in property taxes. The highest county property taxes are in Georgia is in Fulton County where property owners pay on average $2,733.  Warren County has the lowest property taxes in the state where residents median property tax is $314.00.
