The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced last week the awarding of contracts to resurface approximately 11 miles of U.S. 27 in Chattooga County. The project, which is divided into two federally funded phases totaling just over $7 million, is expected to enhance safety and road conditions for local commuters and travelers alike.
Marietta-based C.W. Matthews Contracting Inc. secured the contract for the first phase, which spans 4.3 miles from the community of Gore to the city of Summerville. This $2.9 million project includes milling down the existing pavement and resurfacing the road, as well as rehabilitating the shoulders of the winding route that runs just north of Gore Subligna Road, through Taylor’s Ridge, to the Chattooga River east of Summerville.
The second phase of the project, which continues from Summerville through Pennville to the Chattooga River in Trion, was awarded to Calhoun-based Northwest Georgia Paving Inc. This approximately 6.5-mile project, valued at just over $4.2 million, similarly focuses on milling and resurfacing the roadway.
Crews have until the end of August 2025 to complete both projects, which are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the roadway and ensuring safe travel for the community.
Motorists can expect improved driving conditions once the work is complete, making U.S. 27 a safer and more efficient route for all. As the projects move forward, local residents and travelers are encouraged to remain informed about potential detours and construction updates.
