Longtime Democratic incumbent Chattooga County Coroner Earl Rainwater has announced that he will not seek another term. Rainwater, a native of Tennessee, moved to Chattooga County in the early 1960’s and worked for the late J.D. Hill and later bought the funeral home that Hill operated. Rainwater has been coroner in Chattooga County since 1976, except for one term that he sat out and allowed Steve Speers to run unopposed in the Democratic Primary. Mr. Rainwater and former Probate Judge Jon Payne were the county’s only two constitutional officers that did not switch to the Republican Party just before the 2020 election cycle. There are now four Republicans seeking the position: Savanna McGill, Jeremy “Big Mac” McElhaney, Heath Hammond and Carrie Blackwell. No Democrats have announced their intentions to seek any office in Chattooga County but they still have time to do so. Qualifying for local offices in March 4-March 8th.
