Village of Summerville Marker

Most people realize that Georgia has two Chattooga Rivers – the one we know here in Chattooga County and the more famous one on the other side of the state that was the location for the 1970’s movie “Deliverance”, but some people may not be aware that at one time, Georgia had two “Summervilles” as well – and could once again.

The Village of Summerville is located in Augusta, Georgia and was incorporated in 1861 over two decades after Summerville in Chattooga County was incorporated in 1839.  The area is a large, affluent residential area and historic district located northwest of downtown Augusta. The district is site of the historic homes of John Milledge, George Walton (a signer of the declaration of Independence), and Thomas Cumming. In 1912, the City of Augusta annexed the Village of Summerville and the town ceased to exist.

But last month, a group of citizens in the Summerville community near Augusta met to begin the process of re-establishing the historic village.  Residents say that they aren’t satisfied with their local government and want to establish their own.
