When the Summerville City Council meets this evening for their regular monthly meeting, one of the items on the agenda is a resolution by the city council to “authorize the mayor to sign a resolution to begin the process of implementing a city property tax”.  One city councilman is expressing his opposition to the measure and is encouraging the public to let their voice be heard if they are against a city property tax.

Councilman Rickey Hughes posted on social media over the weekend, “If you are a resident of the city of Summerville or own property in the city and feel the same as I do and do not support adding a city property tax I would like to invite you to attend the Summerville City Council meeting”.  Hughes went on to say, “The more voices that are heard means the better chance we have to get this voted down!! Now’s the time to be heard in this very important decision!!!!”.

The city is struggling with declining revenues and is considering implementing a property tax – something Summerville property owners have not had to pay for many decades.  Tonight’s meeting is open to the public and gets underway at 5 PM.
