With the passage of House Bill 147 on Friday, Chattooga Countians are assured that they won’t receive an extra 2008 tax bill from Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Kathy Van Pelt Brown. That’s because the legislature agreed to send the money for the Homeowners Tax Relief Grant as previously promised, despite the fact the state is facing a huge budget shortfall.
Representative Barbara Massey Reece told AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio on Friday that the state will put part of the Tax Credit in the 2008-2009 Fiscal year and part in the 2009-2010 Fiscal Budget. In the future the tax credit will only be given to home owners if the state’s tax revenues can afford the credit.
Tax Commissioner Brown told AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio that had she not received the money from the legislature this year she would have been forced to bill around $750,000 in additional 2008 property taxes to Chattooga County home owners.
