On a tour of flood-damaged parts of Chattooga County this past week, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp answered questions from homeowners and business owners about whether any government assistance is coming their way after the historic flood that hit Chattooga County over Labor Day Weekend.

Kemp said the state is doing everything in its power to help flood victims.

“I know this has been tough economically for this community and tough on their families,” Kemp said at a news conference after the tour. “Kids are not in their classrooms right now because we don’t have water availability in the schools and obviously parents are dealing with bigger issues right now.”

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry has stated that the county is in the process of gathering data for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  If the county’s devastation meets the criteria, FEMA could recommend that President Biden issue a Federal disaster declaration.

That would open the door for Federal funds to help Chattooga County residents and businesses get back on their feet.
