Coosa River Basin Initiative will host a Q&A style panel discussion on Indigenous Perspectives on Conservation on Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. in McAllister Auditorium at Berry College.
The panel will feature indigenous leaders from various tribes, including the Cherokee, Muscogee, and Choctaw nations. Guests include Dr. Allen Bryant, a professor from the Eastern Band of Cherokee; Mary Crowe, an elder and activist from the Eastern Band of Cherokee; Rev. Chebon Kernell, a spiritual leader and activist from the Muscogee; and LeAnne Howe, a poet, playwright, filmmaker and educator from the Choctaw.
The event will be an opportunity for attendees to gain insight into the rich tapestry of indigenous perspectives on conservation, drawing on the diverse experiences and wisdom of the panelists. The discussion will delve into the intersection of indigenous knowledge, spirituality, and environmental stewardship.
Jesse Demonbreun-Chapman and Courtney Altice from Coosa River Basin Initiative, along with Dr. Jim Watkins from Berry College, will lead the conversation.
“We are thrilled to host this panel discussion as a platform to amplify indigenous voices and foster a greater understanding of their crucial role in conservation efforts,” said Jesse Demonbreun-Chapman, Executive Director of Coosa River Basin Initiative.
The event also marks the launch of a groundbreaking podcast, titled “Downstream, Indigenous Perspectives on Conservation,” which will be officially introduced by CRBI later this spring. The podcast aims to further explore and share the valuable insights discussed during the panel discussion, providing a platform for ongoing dialogue.
“We believe that the Downstream podcast will serve as a powerful tool to continue the conversation sparked by this event and bring these important perspectives to a wider audience,” added Courtney Altice, Communications Manager at Coosa River Basin Initiative.
The Indigenous Perspectives on Conservation panel discussion is open to the public, and admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as seating is limited.
