Despite efforts by legislators and law enforcement officials in three Georgia counties, state crime labs will be closing.

GBI Public Affairs Director John Bankhead said the GBI was contacted by the governor’s office recently there was not enough revenue available to keep all eight GBI crime labs open. After much consideration, the GBI made the difficult decision to close down the Moultrie, Columbus and Summerville crime lab locations.

The GBI Crime Lab in Chattooga County along with the other two crime labs were saved from the budget cuts last year, but their fate seems to be sealed as the Governor and State Legislature continue to try to find ways to save money.
