A jury in Dade County found a Trenton man guilty for killing his own mother, but was also deemed to be mentally ill. Roger Allen Shrader was convicted on eight counts, including malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault in the death of Lagatha “Cathy” Watson.
On March 4th of last year, first responders to a home on Brow Road on Sand Mountain found Watson’s body. She had been assaulted with a machete and a mattock “to the point of near-decapitation,” according to Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney Clayton Fuller.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Shrader had struggled with mental health issues since his childhood, but that he refused treatment, despite pleas from his close family members.
