Funds designated for a “field trip” are missing from a Chattooga County school’s PTA account and investigators say former fourth grade teacher David K. Daniel faces more trouble.

It was three days ago when Trion Police investigators arrested Daniel, 48, of Lyerly, for trying to entice a minor into a sexual encounter. Now his former boss at Leroy Massey Elementary School wants to know why $1,525 is missing.

“On Jan. 20, 2011 at approximately 4:52 p.m., I was dispatched to Leroy Massey Elementary School in reference to missing money. Upon arrival I met with complainant, Judy England, who reported that funds from a PTA account had been fraudulently withdrawn,” Deputy Matt Hayes reported.

The account was opened by school employees at United Community Bank. It was earmarked to save funds for a school field trip. Although four teachers were listed on the account, Daniel allegedly secretly started withdrawing money on Dec. 3, 2010.

The first check for $750 cash was allegedly for “kid’s field trip.’ A second check written for $250 in cash was earmarked for “dance supplies.” A third check written the following day for $200 was tagged for “LMES kid’s Christmas.” The fourth check was written on Christmas Eve for $325 and it was also tagged for “LMES kid’s Christmas,” Deputy Hayes reported.

“Ms. England advised me that to her knowledge none of the previous events ever took place. Ms. England advised me that no funds should have been withdrawn from the PTA account. Ms. England reported that she called Mr. Daniel and questioned him about the missing funds.

Ms. England advised that Mr. Daniel acknowledged that he knew the funds were depleted and advised that he would replace the money,” Deputy Hayes reported.Warrants were issued Friday afternoon for Daniel’s arrest. These additional charges include four counts of theft by taking.

The new charges are in addition to the ones filed by Trion Police earlier this week. Those charges were: criminal attempt to commit child molestation, computer pornography and enticing a child for indecent purposes, according to jail records.
