Daylight Saving Time comes to an end tonight, giving residents across Chattooga County and the rest of the country an extra hour of sleep as clocks return to Standard Time.

The official time change takes place at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1, when clocks will move backward one hour to 1 a.m.

Most smartphones, computers and other electronic devices will make the adjustment automatically. However, traditional clocks, watches, appliances and some vehicle clocks will need to be changed manually before going to bed tonight.

The return to Standard Time means sunrise will occur earlier in the morning, but sunset will also come an hour earlier in the evening. That means it will begin getting dark noticeably sooner Sunday afternoon.

The time change also serves as a reminder for households to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Fire safety officials recommend testing alarms regularly, replacing batteries when needed and checking expiration dates on the devices.

Drivers are also encouraged to use extra caution during the evening commute next week as more motorists will be traveling after sunset. Pedestrians and bicyclists should be especially mindful of reduced visibility during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

Daylight Saving Time will return on Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks will move forward one hour.

For now, the reminder is simple: Before going to bed tonight, turn your clocks back one hour and enjoy the extra hour of sleep Sunday morning.
