Floyd County authorities are investigating the death of an inmate that occurred at his own hands according to Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell. Darrell Gene Patterson,32, of Rome was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon at Floyd Medical Center. Patterson had been in custody on felony charges of burglary and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He allegedly tried to break into the home of a 71-year-old man on Beaver Run. Rome Police reportedly found Patterson in possession of a screwdriver, a metal file and a .38-caliber revolver at the scene of the alleged crime. Caldwell says it is very sad to report Patterson’s death, and adds that a full inquiry into the matter is being conducted
