Chattooga County Sheriff John Everett is expected to have at least two opponents in the upcoming election.
Mark Shrader and Jud Westbrook announced last night at the local Democratic Party’s "Meet the Candidates" that they will run against Everett, both citing problems with leadership in the sheriff’s department. Both men are former Chattooga County sheriff’s deputies. Schrader currently works with the Trion Police Department, while Westbrook is a local business owner.
Charles Latta, former Trion police chief and Chattooga County Animal Control officer Aubrey "Smitty" Smith, also announced that they are considering running for sheriff.
No other local Democrats had any opposition at the event which had a pretty good turnout with around 75 in attendance. Each local office holder and candidate spoke for about 5 minutes and met with those on hand.
Local office holders on hand were Sheriff John Everett, Commissioner Jason Winters, Probate Judge Jon Payne, Magistrate Judge Tracy Maddox, Tax Commissioner Kathy Brown and State Representative Barbara Massey Reece.
