A rule change is proposed by leaders of the Georgia Republican Assembly (GRA), a conservative faction that seems to dislike more moderate Republicans. Nathaniel Darnell, a GRA leader, recently addressed the state Constitution Party vilifying candidates if the most conservative members deem them to be insufficiently conservative or a “traitor” to the party.
The proposed change, according to the AJC, would allow the Georgia GOP convention to vote to prevent a political candidate from qualifying to run as a Republican in the next election. The activist group has made it clear that Governor Brian Kemp, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and other Republican officials are targets of their anger. The proposed rule must first face the state GOP’s rules committee and pass before it can be voted on by the state GOP convention in June.
Party insiders view that as unlikely but say the rule would face immediate legal challenges from the first candidate rejected under the new rules if it did somehow pass.
