Georgia State Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash Monday night involving a City of Summerville backhoe and a Dodge Ram truck on Highway 27 (Georgia 1) just north of the Chattooga River bridge.

Troopers were dispatched at 8:18 PM on January 26, 2026. Investigators say the backhoe was returning from a water main break on Sloppy Floyd Lake Road and traveling north on Highway 27 when a Dodge Ram approached from behind and struck the backhoe’s rear bucket attachment.

After the impact, the truck left the roadway on the east side and came to an uncontrolled stop in a marsh. The male driver of the Dodge Ram appeared to be experiencing a medical emergency and was transported to Atrium Floyd Medical Center in Rome for injuries related to the crash.

Troopers say no charges will be filed due to the driver’s condition. The backhoe operator was not injured.
