The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced that they will be constructing a new bridge on State Route Highway 48 between Summerville and Menlo.

This is the second bridge construction project for Highway 48 in recent months.  The Highway 48 bridge over the East Fork of Little River at Cloudland is currently nearing completion.
The bridge over Racoon Creek on Highway 48 was first constructed in 1938 and was improved in 1984.
The DOT says that the new bridge over Raccoon Creek, three miles west of Summerville, will be 160 feet long and will consist of two 12-foot travel lanes with 8-foot shoulders for 40-foot total clear width.  The roadway typical section will include two 12-foot travel lanes with 10-foot shoulders consisting of 4-foot paved and 6-foot grassed.
DOT officials say there will be no need for a detour during the construction of the new bridge.  The bridge is expected to be completed in 18 months.
