While some areas of the county have seen some pop-up showers and storms over the past week, the county, as well as most of the state, remains in drought conditions.

Measured rainfall of 1-2 inches and more has been recorded in some parts of the county over the past seven days, but it has not been enough to alleviate the dry conditions.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, over 78% of the county is experiencing moderate drought conditions. That area extends from Lookout Mountain on the western border of the county to roughly Taylor’s Ridge. The areas east of the ridge have seen more rainfall, but are still considered to be “abnormally dry”.

Also, the area streams and rivers, while not in critical stage, are running below normal.

The U.S. Drought Monitor has designated Chattooga, Walker and Floyd Counties to be officially in drought stage.
