One of the three victims rescued from the frigid waters of Weiss Lake early Sunday morning after their boat capsized near Hog Island just off of the State Docks in Cedar Bluff has been identified as Dr. Jerry Wayne Handley. Handley and his son along with another individual who has not been identified at this time were apparently on a duck hunting trip when their vessel began to sank, fortunately one of the men was able to hold onto a cell phone and call 9-1-1.
Cherokee 9-1-1 received the call just before 5:00am, the Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Cherokee EMS, and Alabama Marine Police along with Local Law Enforcement all responded to the scene. Heroic efforts of Paramedics and Rescue Personnel resulted in the three men’s lives being saved although suffering from severe Hypothermia. The victims were transported to Cherokee Medical Center for treatment and then taken to Gadsden Regional Medical Center, their condition is not known at this time.
