The U.S. Geological Survey says that two earthquakes struck just a few minutes apart in Northwest Georgia, near the Alabama state line.  The epicenter of the first quake was just over the Chattooga County Georgia / DeKalb County line near Cloudland.  The second quake’s epicenter was about 500 feet from the first quake.  The first quake at 12:24 PM had a magnitude of 2.4 and struck from a depth of 6.15 miles (9.9km).  Three minutes later, the second quake struck at 12:27 PM with a magnitude of 2.0 and a depth of 6.46 miles (10.4km).  Generally, weak earthquakes impact Georgia from time to time with no other significant quakes occurring in the state over the last year. There has only been one other earthquake in Georgia in the last 30 days and a total of 12 earthquakes over the last 90 days. Six of those earthquakes, including the two that struck Friday, were rated a magnitude 2.0 or greater event. Friday’s magnitude 2.4 event was the strongest to hit the state since June 18, 2022.
