Max Cleland, a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War who lost an arm and both legs while serving his nation, passed away earlier this year.  Now, Georgia lawmakers are advocating for the Veterans Hospital in Decatur to be named in Cleland’s honor.

Cleland came back from Vietnam and was elected first to the Georgia General Assembly.  He then served in the Carter Administration as head of the Veterans Administration.  He also served later Presidents  Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barak Obama.

Georgia’s United State Senators are now behind an effort to rename the Atlanta Veterans Hospital the Max Cleland VA Hospital.

Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock is leading a bipartisan group of legislators in favor of the name change.  Warnock said, “We lost a true giant of public service, a leader, difference-maker and passionate patriot with a big heart for our veterans and communities.”
