A 73-year-old Summerville man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly striking a parked vehicle in Trion and later showing signs of severe intoxication to responding officers. Randy Thomas Smith faces a misdemeanor DUI charge following the October 25, 2025, incident.

According to a report from the Trion Police Department (Case No. 2025-10-35926), Cpl. Jared Wilks was dispatched to 303 India Drive in Trion in response to a domestic dispute involving a damaged vehicle. Upon arrival, Wilks spoke with Nassim Alfonso and her son, who stated that Smith, a friend who had been driving them home, had been driving erratically and above the speed limit.

Alfonso alleged that as Smith pulled into her driveway, he misjudged his distance and struck her parked truck. Following the collision, an argument ensued, and Smith reportedly left the scene without exchanging information or offering to pay for the damage.

Cpl. Wilks, familiar with Smith from a previous arrest, obtained his address and proceeded to his Summerville residence to discuss the incident. Officers from the Summerville Police Department, Sgt. Pritchard and Officer Goings, were reportedly already at Smith’s home speaking with him when Wilks arrived.

Upon interacting with Smith, Cpl. Wilks observed him to be very unsteady on his feet and exhibiting slurred speech. An odor of alcohol was also emanating from his breath. Smith agreed to a voluntary portable breath test, which registered a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .209 – more than two and a half times the legal limit of .08 in Georgia.

He also consented to a Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) field sobriety test. During the test, Smith reportedly struggled to follow instructions, with his head frequently following the stimulus rather than just his eyes. Cpl. Wilks noted in his report that it was “apparent that Smith was extremely intoxicated, possibly being triple the legal limit.”

Based on the observations and test results, Smith was placed under arrest for DUI. He was read Georgia’s implied consent notice for individuals 21 years or older but subsequently denied consenting to a blood draw.

During a probable cause search of Smith’s vehicle, officers located an open container of brandy in the driver’s side door and several more brandy bottles on the driver’s floorboard. These items were documented and photographed as part of the evidence.

Smith’s wife informed officers that he had arrived home approximately 15 minutes before their arrival and had immediately begun washing his vehicle “randomly,” leading her to believe “he done something wrong.”
