Georgia leads the nation in the production of pecans, but Hurricane Helene severely damaged Georgia’s pecan crop, destroying about one-third of the state’s annual harvest. This caused significant financial losses for farmers who had already been struggling with tariffs, high costs, and low prices. Many farmers lost century-old trees, setting them back years in terms of production. The hurricane’s impact on the pecan industry is expected to lead to a shortage and price increases, impacting consumers who enjoy pecan products like pecan pie and butter pecan ice cream. While some farmers may have crop insurance, the long-term recovery from losing mature trees will be challenging.  Agricultural officials say that while the state is stepping in to help farmers in Georgia affected by the hurricane, it will be a long road to recovery.  Consumers can expect higher prices for Georgia Pecans this holiday season.
