Flowers, grave decorations and gravel moved off cemetery plots at Summerville Cemetery

Workers at the Summerville Cemetery were busy this past week cleaning off graves, but that has some family members upset.

The workers were taking off flowers and removing borders and gravel from around graves at the cemetery which has some family members that have loved ones buried in the cemetery upset.

Family members reached out to WZQZ News to express their displeasure. One person stated, “I would like to know why head stones are being removed from the Summerville Cemetery with no notification to the family’s. I would think that’s not legal. The family’s own the head stones and the plots.”

As the old saying goes, the devil is in the details it seems.  The cemetery is overseen by a private corporation that sets the rules for the grave sites.  In the late 1970’s, the cemetery was expanded.  Now, the corporation that oversees the cemetery says that rules will be enforced regarding the upkeep of the graves.

Reportedly, the cemetery corporation ran an ad in The Summerville News to let family members know that the rules were going to be enforced.

Some family members have told WZQZ News that they plan to see what legal action they can take and others are saying that they will move their loved ones to a different cemetery.
