The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been called in to investigate a woman who died who skydiving in Northwest Georgia on Sunday.

According to reports a 26 year-old Roswell woman fell to her death in a field on Mullen Road in Polk County.

Polk County Coroner Norman Smith said that no additional details have yet been released about the death, which occurred near Skydive Spaceland on Grady Road in Rockmart.

While skydiving is considered a dangerous sport, the United States Parachute Association (USPA) says that skydiving fatalities are rare.  According to the organization, in 2021, USPA recorded 10 fatal skydiving accidents—the lowest year on record—a rate of 0.28 fatalities per 100,000 jumps. This is comparable to 2020, where participants made fewer jumps—2.8 million—and USPA recorded 11 fatalities, a rate of 0.39 per 100,000.
