The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued its 2012 Fish Consumption Advisories and Weiss Lake is on the list. The advisory states that people should only consume one meal per month of all species of fish out of Weiss Lake due to PCB contamination.

Carolyn Landrum, President of the Weiss Lake Improvement Association, says it isnt clear as to why there has been such a dramatic difference in the fish advisory when compared to years past.

From 2004 to 2011 there were no fish from Weiss Lake on the advisory list. In 2011, only stripe and channel catfish at the dam location were included.

Some feel the change is not due to worsening contamination, but is instead the result of more stringent standards.

Landrum says there are many different standards and her group wants to find out how the numbers are calculated in order to get a true and accurate picture.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, fish consumption advisories are issued for specific water bodies and specific species taken from those areas. The analysis was conducted by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management in the fall of last year.

A meal portion consists of 6 ounces of cooked fish or 8 ounces of raw fish.
