Summerville Police were contacted by a Florida property developer regarding a scam this week.

According to a report released by the Summerville Police Department, John Shields contacted them about a scam involving water meters.  Police say that Shields’ land development company was planning a mobile home park in Summerville and had sent money for a Bradley County, Tennessee man to pay for water meters from the City of Summerville Water Department.  Shields sent $22,000 for the meters.  The contractor deposited the money in a local account in Summerville, but the check written to the city for the meters bounced.

Now, Shields says he can’t find the Tennessee contractor.  In fact, Shields told police that he has since learned the contractor is “on the run” from several other land developers that he has scammed with a similar scheme.

Shields identified the contractor as Jeff Goldberg in the police report.

The incident has been turned over to an investigator with the Summerville Police Department.
