The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia says an Alberta Clipper moving across the area could bring measurable snow this afternoon and evening to Chattooga County and surrounding areas.  See the update from the NWS and Chattooga EMA below:

An Alberta Clipper system is expected to move across the southeastern states late this afternoon and evening. Typically these systems manage to squeeze out any moisture in the atmosphere, leading to light snow or flurries.
  • The system is still being resolved by the models.
  • The timing and intensity of this system could change as the Clipper continues to develop and move south.
  •  As the system moves through north Georgia, temperatures will be falling into the lower to middle 30s.
  • Ground temperatures are already abnormally cold due to the recent cold snap, and measurable snow will likely stick to surfaces.
  • The forecast could change rapidly today, so please stay tuned to any updated forecasts in case subsequent Winter Weather Advisories need to be issued. 

There is still a great deal of uncertainty associated with this system, but some elements are beginning to solidify a bit more.  Confidence levels are included below. 

 
Confidence Level: MEDIUM TO HIGH
  • This fast moving system is expected to bring light snow showers and/or flurries as far south as the southern suburbs of Atlanta this afternoon and evening.
  • The main precipitation type will be snow, although rain could briefly mix in at times during the late afternoon.
  • Timing of Snow Showers and/or Flurries:
    • Far NW Georgia between 4PM and 6 PM and taper off by midnight.
    • Areas between the mountains and northern Atlanta suburbs between 6 PM and 8 PM and taper off by 1 AM.
    • Athens, the ATL metro and the southern suburbs of ATL between 7 PM and 9 PM and taper off between 1 AM and 2 AM.
Confidence Level: LOW TO MEDIUM
  • Precipitation Coverage:
    • Currently, the forecast calls for scattered to isolated snow showers. If the system comes in stronger than anticipated, coverage of snow showers could increase.
  • Snowfall accumulations:
    • The system will be fighting very dry air in the lower levels, so any snow falling may have a hard time making it to the surface.
    • The best chances for measurable snowfall will be across far north Georgia with amounts of one quarter to half an inch possible at the higher elevations.
    • Further south, towards metro Atlanta and the Interstate 20 corridor, snowfall accumulations will taper off – but could range from as much as a tenth of an inch to a trace.
