Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at First Baptist Church in LaFayette for a former long-time lawmaker that represented Chattooga , Walker, Dade and a portion of Whitfield Counties in the Georgia Senate.

Waymond “Sonny” Huggins passed away on Friday of last week.  He served as a Democrat in the Georgia Senate where he served on Health & Human Services;  Natural Resources;  Retirement;  State Parks Study Committee; and  Transportation. While on the Transportation Committee, he was instrumental in the widening of U.S. Hwy 27 into four lanes.  

Senator Huggins was a charter  member  of  the  LaFayette  Optimist  Club  and past  president;  was  ordained  in  1969  as  a  deacon  at  the  First  Baptist  Church  of  LaFayette  where  he  was  a  member  for  fifty  years. 

Former State Representative Barbara Massey Reece (D-Menlo) said, “It was a pleasure to work with him to get water for Cloudland, playground equipment for Lyerly and Pennville Schools, AEDs for the fire trucks and sheriff cars, and many more needed projects. He was a true gentleman and I am honored to have known and worked with him.”
