Trion resident, and former city councilman and mayor of Trion, Lanny Thomas says that he will challenge incumbent Republican State Senator Jeff Mullis in the Republican Primary in May of this year. 

Thomas attended the meeting of the Walker County Republican Party recently and made the announcement. Thomas served four years on the Trion City Council and also four years as mayor. Thomas worked in education for thirty years before retiring. 

Senator Mullis has served as state senator for the fifty-third senate district since 2001.  He lives in Chickamauga and is in the powerful position as Rules Chairman in the Georgia State Senate.  As chairman of the rules committee Mullis decides which bills will make it to the senate floor.  

The fifty-third senate district is made of Walker, Dade, part of Catoosa County and a large portion of Chattooga County.
