Fox Theatre announced it has awarded a substantial $20,000 grant to support the renovation of the historic Tooga Theater balcony. This funding comes from the 2024-2025 Fox Gives grants program, a testament to the Fox Theatre’s dedication to preserving cultural landmarks and strengthening communities across Georgia.
Eugene McGinnis, President of the Chattooga County Historical Society, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “The Tooga’s renovation is not merely a matter of preserving bricks and mortar, but of revitalizing a vital part of our community’s history and identity.” The Tooga Theater, a beloved venue known for its rich history and vibrant performances, will soon undergo significant improvements that promise to enhance the experience for future audiences. Since launching in 2008, the Fox Gives program has expanded its philanthropic reach, doubling its financial commitment to preserve historic theaters and venues throughout Georgia and the Southeast.
With over $3.7 million awarded to more than 70 historic theaters to date, the program supports a wide range of grant categories, including emergency needs, historic structure studies, technical assistance, and preservation efforts. Leigh Burns, Director of Community Partnerships for Fox Gives, commented on the initiative’s impact: “We’ve reaffirmed our mission to preserve and share both at the Fox Theatre and across Georgia. We’re proud to build on 16 years of preservation projects, remaining committed to inspiring future generations of preservationists.” The Tooga Theater’s renovation will serve not only as a restoration of a physical space but also as a beacon of cultural vitality in the community.
In addition to the grant program, the Fox Theatre’s community partnerships division manages outreach initiatives such as Fox in a Box, an educational program for Georgia’s elementary schools; Georgia Presenters, a statewide talent booking network; and the All-Access Pass Program, which enriches performing arts experiences and encourages the next generation of theater supporters. As Chattooga County prepares for the renovation, community members are eagerly anticipating the revitalization of the Tooga Theater and the role it will play in preserving the area’s cultural heritage.
