Walker County residents will have an opportunity to pick up free mulch next week as the county brings back its Mulch Madness event at the Walker County Landfill.

The giveaway will run Monday, August 17 through Saturday, August 22, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day, while supplies last.

Walker County Government says a record year for tree and brush collections left the landfill with an unusually large amount of material. Solid Waste employees have spent the past two weeks processing that material into mulch, resulting in more mulch than the facility currently has room to store.

To help clear space while putting the material to good use, the county is making a portion of the mulch available to residents at no charge.

The giveaway is for Walker County residents only. Each household will be limited to two loader scoops of mulch, while supplies last.

Residents participating in Mulch Madness should pull up to the scale house at the landfill and tell an employee they are there for the mulch giveaway. Staff members will then direct participants to the appropriate area.

The Walker County Landfill is located at 5120 N. Marble Top Road in Chickamauga.

The free mulch can be used for flower beds, landscaping and other outdoor projects.

Again, the Mulch Madness offer is limited to Walker County residents and will continue only as long as supplies are available.
