What started off as a friendly wager between Georgia State Troopers and their counterparts in Florida back into 1991 has become one of the major high visibility patrol campaigns for law enforcement in five Southeastern states.

Back in 1991, state troopers in Georgia and Florida decided to bet a little money on who could limit the number of alcohol-related traffic deaths in their state during the Labor Day travel period. Within ten years, the effort grew to all states bordering Georgia holding joint road checks at their state lines on the week before Labor Day with the goal of taking impaired drivers off the roads prior to the final summer holiday travel period of the year.

While the Labor Day Weekend is still a few weeks away, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reminds motorists that the Georgia State Patrol and law enforcement partners across the state are currently participating in 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. (Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic).

This campaign is a multi-jurisdictional highway safety program designed to reduce fatal crash counts during Georgia’s deadly holiday driving period from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Law enforcement partners operate 100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T. in all corners of the state looking for all manner of unsafe motorists…from drunk drivers and aggressive speeders to distracted drivers who continue to text while behind the wheel.
