In 1995, the World Friendship Flag Project, promoting peace and friendship, across the world, began in Summerville. It was spearheaded then, and is cheered on today, by John Turner, now retired but previously an art teacher at Chattooga High School and Rotary International’s high school student club advisor in Summerville. Thanks to efforts by Turner and many others including Summerville’s world-renowned folk-artist Howard Finster, Summerville has become known as the “Friendship Capital of the World.”

Tomorrow, Summerville Main Street will host the annual “Friendship Festival” at Dowdy Park from 10 AM – 4 PM.  The festival will feature events such as a recognition of Rotary International’s District 6910 adult and student clubs at noon, a “Sister Cities in Friendship” Pedestrian Parade of Flags & Banners in the park at 1 PM., and an old-fashioned hymn singalong at 3 PM.

Throughout the day attendees can enjoy live music, food by at least ten food vendors, free children’s activities, miniature train and pony rides, and more.
